In order to prevent cyber harassment, the schools need to create an educational setting that is safe, secure, and free from bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind among students. The school policy should be to encourage use of new technology without harassment based upon any sex, race, religion, age, political beliefs and other differences.
Students’ Rights and Responsibilities
1. Students have the right to be respected and accepted as individuals.
2. Students have the right to use social networks in a manner approved by the school 3. Students have the responsibility to respect the rights of others and their privacy. 3. Students have the responsibility to report evidence of an illegal act or violation of above.
Rights and Responsibilities of teachers 1. Teachers have the right to be respected and accepted as individuals.
2. Teachers have the right to inquire into social network activities by students 3. Teachers have the responsibility to develop anti harassment environment in School. 4. Teachers have the responsibility to educate students on consequences of cyber harassment 5. Teachers have the responsibility to develop empathy among students.. 6. Teachers have the responsibility to inquire into illegal act or violation of above.
Rights and Responsibilities of parents 1. Parents have the right to know how their children use social networks.
2. Parents have the right to report social network activities that they feel offended. 3. Parents have the responsibility to educated their children on conduct in social networks. 4. Parents have the responsibility to report illegal act or violation of above.
Student Consequences
The consequence for a student who commits an act bullying or harassment in cyberspace need to to be stated in school policy and they must be made aware. Depending on degree of severity of the offence following actions could be taken.
Major Offenses
• Assignment to an alternative education program
• Community service in lieu of suspension
• In-school suspension
• Suspension from school
